NAME: Miriam 'Midge' Maisel
CANON: The Marvelous Mrs Maisel
AGE: 27
CANON POINT: end of s3
HISTORY: wiki link
PERSONALITY: Midge Maisel is nothing if not confident. She's bubbly, and her quick wit and fast-paced way of speaking is unique and memorable. A former 50s housewife turned comedian, Midge was raised in the Upper West Side of New York and it shows: she can come across as a little spoiled, sheltered and judgey, although by her canon point a little less so. An extrovert and optimist at heart, Midge has an immediate, demanding presence: she loves attention and isn't afraid to let people know, even if it's a joke at her expense. Privileged and raised in a Jewish household with an emphasis on being the perfect wife, Midge has embraced all things feminine, even though she doesn't necessarily embrace all of the traditional 50s housewife ideals anymore. Her manager goes so far as to joke about how she's a 'borscht-belt barbie,' which is painfully accurate. In general, she comes across as a perfect 50s girl until she drops the f-bomb in her comedy acts: she's warm, trustworthy, hilarious and loves nothing more than a good time (and a good shade of lipstick).
A surprisingly integral part of her personality comes from her wardrobe. As stated previously, Midge looks practically perfect, and it's both her armor and a fault. She can come across as incredibly vain because she always looks her best no matter the occasion--much to her manager's delight and annoyance--and she has an incredibly good reason for this she's learned from her mother: She cannot control other people, nor can she control other peoples' opinions of her (as much as she desperately wants to). What she can control is how she looks, and if she looks good, she feels good--when all else fails, she at least feels absolutely stunning. While she's no longer obsessively getting up before her now ex-husband notices to look her best, she incorporates her need to look as put together as possible in her stand-up acts, often wearing black dresses and evening gowns to boost her confidence and appearance. If it's an important occasion, she's got an outfit for it. If it's a minor occasion, she probably has to go back home and change, because people have already seen her in what she's currently wearing, et cetera.
Midge is incredibly stubborn. While she's not exactly spiteful, she has gone and done things just because people have implied she couldn't-standup, for one, although she needed convincing from Susie. It's not her main drive, but proving people wrong about her is something she does enjoy deeply. She's headstrong, especially compared to where she was in the beginning of the series, and loves a challenge. Midge is also always ready to stand up for others, even though it gets her into trouble--often because her mouth is faster than her mind. She's the epitome of Type A personality: always a planner, Midge is the type of person to feel far more comfortable when she's neat and organized. She's very much a creative person, having recently stepped into her own and figured out who she is--it's an ongoing journey to find herself, and once she's both proud of and constantly worried she's never going to live up to her own expectations.
Her comedy, like her fashion, is a huge part of who she is. She's just recently found her voice in comedy: irreverent, witty, intelligent and observational. Her love of attention and need for validation, as well as her natural charisma and the aforementioned traits make her a phenomenal powerhouse in her newly chosen field. She's naturally gifted at stand up, of course, even though her first two or three sets were more hilariously unhinged, panicked rants where she was either incredibly drunk or incredibly high. Once she got off of that crutch and actually learned her craft by listening to others (and with a little help from Lenny Bruce), she's become a phenomenal force. Her comedy mirrors her personal growth, too--by the time she's on tour with Shy Baldwin, the show's amalgamation of Harry Belafonte and Johnny Mathis, Midge is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to how in tune she is with her combination of talent, hard work, and her ambition. She's still terrified of failure, but she can certainly hide it well now.
As confident and put together as she appears, it's no surprise that she's not afraid to call other people out, especially when it comes to people acting unfairly--she breaks one of her stand-up routines to absolutely verbally assassinate Sophie Lennon (rightly so) without even thinking, which earns her being blacklisted: proof that she does have a problem with acting impulsively, especially when she's in her element. The more comfortable she is, the more she tends to get a little self-absorbed, for lack of a better word: she's incredibly opinionated and isn't afraid to get fired up about it. This usually comes out in the form of comedic tangents, which are a delight for her audiences. It should also be noted that when she's on a roll, she also has a tendency to not know when to stop--not in terms of comedy, but in terms of subject matter. For example, because people were laughing and because of her desire to win over the audience at the Apollo, she very nearly outed Shy Baldwin as a homosexual. She's observant, too, using her keen intellect to keep an eye out on material for her shows.
Midge is not, however, without her faults: while she recognizes that failing is a natural part of growing as a professional and a person, she absolutely abhors it. She tries not to hold grudges but she gets so upset that Susie takes on Sophie Lennon as a second client she winds up passive-aggressively taking it out on Susie, who she considers her best friend. She has a tendency to be a very stereotypical girl when she's mad, and combined with her sense of humour, she often winds up stewing and throwing catty remarks around until she finally blows up. While she does try to fight back against the overly-"perfect" 50s ideals, she is very much a product of her time: she's not sexist or homophobic or racist by a long shot, in fact she's incredibly accepting, it's more that she's incredibly naive about that sort of thing. It took her a split second to even process that Shy Baldwin was gay, for example--and the problems that he's faced because he's also black. She's a genuinely friendly person and wants to get to know people to the point of being nosey at times, but she tries to be helpful. Some people also don't appreciate that when she feels trapped, panicked or confused (or is just stressed) she has the tendency to joke. She also constantly needs someone to confide in in order to feel safe--she's very much a people person. Lastly, while she's accepting of others almost instantly, she tends to be incredibly hard on herself--it's another reason why she functions a lot better with a friend or someone that understands her.
Ultimately, Midge Maisel, while a perfectly normal human being power-wise, is one hell of a force to be reckoned with: she's funny, charming, kind and accepting, but will absolutely sink her teeth into any problem or issue she deems unfair.
CRAU:
SPECIES: Human
APPEARANCE: link
SKILLS: Catskills Swim Instructor: Midge is trained in basic first aid, as well as the ability to teach others to swim.
Russian Literature: While she's not fluent in Russian, Midge has a degree in Russian Literature and a basic college/university education.
Religion: A devout Jew, Midge is well versed in Judaism and practices her religion regularly.
People Person: While she doesn't have supernatural abilities, Midge is adept at reading a room and naturally knowing how to steer a conversation one way or another--she's highly intuitive and her prowess in basic etiquette/the art of conversation (at least circa 1950s) is unmatched.
Housewife: Simply put, she's an absolute beast in the kitchen, save curry: she keeps kosher, but her brisket, for example, is enough to bribe cafe owners to give her a better timeslot for her husband.
Mom: Midge is also phenomenal with children, as she has two of her own.
NEW POWER: Persuasion. At the starting level, people will just be more inclined to find her agreeable (or hilarious, if she chooses to use it during a set). Since it's starting level, she won't be able to force people to do anything they won't want to do--instead of controlling them, she can just sort of nudge them in the right direction/her trying to convince them will be a little stronger than if she just used her words.
POWER REASONING: Midge is naturally good at this in canon: she convinces the Gaslight to give her husband time slots before she takes over as a comedian, for example.
